Twisted Twenty-One can be played with 2-8 players.
A game of Twisted Twenty-One tytpically takes 45-90 minutes, depending on the number of players, points, and rounds played.
Quick games lasts 3 rounds, Standard games last 6 rounds, and extended rounds last 8 or more rounds. Before the game begins, players can also agree on how many points to start with, such as 6 or 10, and create their own combination of rounds and starting points. These game modes are suggestions, so players are free to customize the length of their games. The last remaining player or the player with the most points at the end of the agreed upon number of rounds wins.
At the start of every round, the Twist target resets to 21. The Twist Target can only be changed by certain Twist Cards, such as Twist Target 18, Twist Target 24, or Twist Target 27. When one of these cards are played, the new Twist Target applies to every player for the rest of the round, as specified on the card, or until it is changed by another Twist Card.
If your hand goes over the Twist target, you are considered busted. However. unlike traditional blackjack, you do not reveal your cards or stop playing. You remain in the round and can use Twist Cards to manipulate your hand, change the Twist target, or manipulate other players' hand.
At the end of the round:
If one or more players are at or below the Twist Target, all players who are over the Twist Target automatically lose. The player whose hand is closest to or exactly at the Twist target wins.
If all playes are over the Twist Target, the player whose hand is closest to the Twist Target wins.
This means being over the Twist Target does not automatically eliminate you. You can still manipulate the game and get your hand back at or below the Twist Target.
Yes, you may look at any face-down Playing Cards in your hand, and you may look at any Twist Cards you have. Keep the values and effects of your cards secret from other players.
If a face-down Playing Card is drawn by you via a Twist Card, you may look at it. If that card is later stolen by another player using a Twist Card effect, it remains face-down, but the player who now has the card may look at it. The original player and the new player therefore know the card's value.
If the card is stolen again, the new player may also look at it. The card remains face-down throughout the round, while each player who has possesed it may know it's value.
All playing cards are revealed once the round ends. However, a players' unused Twist Cards remain in their hand and are kept secret.
You may play any number of Twist Cards during your Twist Phase, before your Action Phase begins. During the Action Phase, you can choose to Hit (draw a Playing Card) or Stay (do not draw a Playing Card), then the players turn ends.
Reaction Cards, identified by a shield symbol, are an exception. They may be played immediately in response to another player activating a Twist Card. The reaction Card resolves first, before the original Twist Card's effects are completed.
The Prevent Game Loss Twist Card may only be played during your Twist Phase, and only when losing the round could reduce your points to 0.
Twist Cards that specifically indicate "One Opponent" affect one other player of your choice. If a Twist Card does not indicate an opponent, the card is played on yourself.
Twist Cards that indicate "All Players," both affect you as well as every other player in the game.
Twist Cards and Round Point Modifier Twist Cards change the game mechanics. Therefore their effects apply to everyone as the game rules dictate, rather than targeting individual players.
If two or more Twist Cards interact, conflict, or are played close together, thier effects are resolved one at a time in the order the cards were played. A Twist Card must finish resolving before the next Twist Card's effect becomes active.
Reaction Cards, identified by a shield symbol, are an exception. When a Reaction Card is played in response to another Twist Card, the Reaction Card resolves first, before the original Twist Card's effect is completed.
At the end of each round, the player whose Playing Card hand is closest to or exactly at the Twist Target wins. All other players are considered losers.
The winner gains the number of points determined by the round, plus or minus any Round Point Modifiers in effect. Each loser loses that same number of points.
Round 1: 1 Point
Round 2: 2 Points
Round 3: 3 Points
And so on.
If two or more players tie for the winning hand, those players neither gain nor lose points, their scores remain unchanged for that round.
If you run out of points or chips, after the round is over and scoring is complete, you are eliminated from the game and can no longer participate in the remaining rounds.
